The 17th Annual WOMANSPACE Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award Event
Honoring Faith Ringgold, Acclaimed Artist and Writer
Ms. Ringgold began her artistic career more than 35 years ago as a painter. Today, she is best known for her painted story quilts - art that combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling. She has exhibited in major museums in the USA, Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She is in the permanent collection of many museums including the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art. Her first book, Tar Beach, was a Caldecott Honor Book and winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, among numerous other honors. She has written and illustrated eleven children's books. Here in Mercer County, the third floor of the Princeton Public Library features
a mosaic mural from Ms. Ringgold's book Tar Beach.
Be sure to mark your calendar for May 12, 2011, and join us for a celebratory dinner and award reception honoring Ms. Ringgold's achievements. This year's event will take place at a new location, The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village,
from 6:30 to 9:00pm. Our 2011 BBS Honorary Chair is Cokie Roberts, sister of our late founder and award namesake. Register online for tickets or sponsorships today.

Womanspace, Inc. is participating in Denim Day in NJ, a rape prevention education campaign. We are asking community members, elected officials, businesses, and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement.
Join the Denim Day movement by signing the pledge for non-violence, by educating yourself and others on facts about sexual assault, and by wearing jeans at your job or school on Thursday, April 28, 2011.
In 1998 the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault. The justices stated that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her jeans, from which they inferred consent.
Enraged by the verdict, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Italian Parliament building. Wearing jeans on Denim Day became an international symbol of protest against destructive myths about sexual assault.
